Welcome to Baruca
A prisoner, A correction facility for psychiatric prisoners, a group of masked mercenaries who want that prisoner out, a warden who cannot let that prisoner go at any cost, and multiple layers of suspense. Add to it the fact that the entire story plays out in just one night. An interesting premise, isn’t it?
A really long night
The Mexican web series “The longest night” had so much going for it and, yet the final outcome is a tad bit underwhelming.
The story begins with an infamous serial killer, nicknamed ‘The alligator’, getting arrested. As he was being driven to the prison, a phone call instructs the policemen to transfer him to a psychiatric correction facility named Baruca.
All the players arrive
We are soon introduced to a bunch of mercenaries for hire who receive a job to break that prisoner out of that facility. We are also introduced to our lead protagonist who is a warden in the same correction facility. He soon learns that if he allows the coveted prisoner to be taken away by the mercenaries, his elder daughter will be killed.
A game of chess
With such high stakes, begins a game of outsmarting each other as our hero has to deal not just with Mercenaries trying to get in but also violent psychiatric criminals wanting to get out. Alliances are made and broken as each character plays for their own interest.
Too many subplots
Intertwined in this central plot are many side stories. Some of these are beautifully connected to the main story while a couple feel like subplots added just to drag the show to second season.
A shocking yet unsatisfying end
Amidst the topsy turvy storyline, we are left hanging with many questions and a shocking reveal at the end of final episode. The very fact that we learn little of the actual conspiracy makes this one an unsatisfying watch at the end.
The longest night does have a lot going for it but the will of writers to drag the story without dropping any major reveals makes this a show you must avoid unless there is confirmed news of season 2.
