Hello Movie Maniacs
When you have an amazing line-up of actors at your disposal (Karen Gillan, David Duchovny, Keegan-Michael Key, Leslie Mann, Kate McKinnon, Pedro Pascal, Guz Khan and Peter Serafinowicz), and you yourself are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to making comedy films (Judd Apatow – The 40 year old Virgin, Knocked up), one expects a laugh riot.
This is exactly what I had in mind when I decided the stream Netflix latest offering The Bubble.
Well, the bubble has been burst.
How? I will tell you how. So, let’s prep the OT, shall we?
The Premise
The basic setup of the bubble is not exactly incredibly unique in times of pandemic, but it still provides an ideal platform to create a satirical piece of cinema. The movie is about a bunch of actors stuck with the movie crew in an isolated location, away from the world in what is commonly known as The Bubble.
Story, or the lack of it!
The movie is supposed to be satirical take on the life of movie stars and about how much they are ignorant about reality of the world. It attempts to show the shallowness of celebrity life but unfortunately the director kind of missed that memo somewhere in first 15 minutes. Barring a few gags that actually make you chuckle, and interesting cameos (Thank you Professor Charles Xavier… I mean James McAvoy), the entire movie is just a directionless accumulation of forced humor. Story is completely haywire and becomes a tiresome watch with each passing minute.
Performances
On the acting front, almost all the actors have done fair justice to their role except for Karen Gillian. Ms. Nebula is the center piece of this movie, and she has given probably the most disastrous performance of her career. She is obnoxiously loud, whiny and irritating all at the same time. Every time she would appear on-screen, my index finger would start searching for the forward button, and I have had a crush on her since when she was Amy Pond.
Another actor who had limited screen time but was hamming up beyond the limits of tolerance is Vir Das.
The one actor who has had the best part in this movie is Pedro Pascal. He has given an effortless performance which is probably the only saving grace of this fiasco.
Final Verdict
Overall, the bubble is yet another languid product from the production line of Netflix. Someone rightly said that professionalism kills passion. The line-up of Netflix movies in recent times has been evidence supporting that notion.
Skip this one entirely and save some time.
