Hello Movie Maniacs
A Small town, a cement factory, a ruthless factory owner, a corrupt cop, an aggressive union leader and a missing girl. From the outset Suzhal seems like yet another mystery thriller set in a sleepy location just like Candy and Aranyak but it is way way better than both combined.
Set in a small fictional town Sembaloor in Tamil Nadu, where a lone cement factory serves as the bread and butter of entire village, Suzhal is a mystery that keeps playing with your mind.
A flaming start
In the first episode we are greeted by all the major stakeholders in this 8 episode thriller. Shanmugam is a union leader holding a strike against the owner of Cement factory Mr. Trilok. We are also introduced to the local police led by corrupt cop Regina Thomas and sub inspector Sakkarai. By the end of first episode the same factory is in flames and that fire is just the beginning of a mystery thriller which has more twists and turns than a pretzel.
Soon, we learn about the sudden disappearance of Shanmugam’s younger daughter Nila, as the village is gearing up to celebrate a 9 day long festival named Mayana Kollai. Over the next 7 episodes we are treated to masterpiece storytelling by the duo of Pushkar and Gayathri.
A tale of million twists
The series may seem like a simple crime thriller upon reading synopsis but it is anything but simple. The writers keep throwing curveballs after curveballs and just when you think that you have the mystery figured out, they turn the tables on you. What more can be said about the quality of suspense that the real mystery is unravelled in last 15 minutes of final episode.
Another beautiful aspect of this series is that even though it’s primarily a mystery thriller, Suzhal still touches a lot of human emotions and social issues in a very subtle manner. From the plight of eunuchs to the issue of infidelity, the series touches these subjects without becoming preachy.
Perfect Cast
The storytelling masterpiece is backed by apt casting and brilliant performances from all actors. It is impossible to pick one bad performance because there is none. The star of this show though is Kathir as SI Sakkarai. He keeps displaying a wide range of emotions as he frantically tries to solve the mystery that is ripping apart the social fabric of the town.
The best Indian web series
Suzhal is undoubtedly the best Indian web series available on any OTT platform. No wonder it has been garnering positive praise from all corners of the world. This is a must see binge watch.
