What I expected
When the trailer first came out, I was a little confused. How can two actors play the same role. Then I realized what the makers were attempting to do. It was a beautiful way to preserve the memories of a celebrated actor and a great person- Rishi Kapoor ji. Back to the trailer. It gave the impression of a typical middle class story, some light moments and a feel good factor. Ideal for an OTT release.
Story
The story is simple, no unnecessary fuss. The makers kept it simple, banking on Rishi ji’s charisma and charm. It is a story about Mr B.G Sharma, a middle class widower, who takes VRS and stays at home. He loves cooking. After trying out everything to keep himself occupied, takes to cooking in a kitty party one day. It is a hit, and he starts getting more orders from the “kitty party group”. How that changes his life in small measures forms the rest of the plot. There is a sub-plot about his relationship with his sons, and how they perceive each other.
Performances
Rishi Kapoor ji could have been the life and soul of the film had he been able to complete it. He fits perfectly in the role of Sharmaji, as an affable, sometimes irritable 60 year old. Paresh Rawal carries forward the character equally well. There is a subtle difference in their interpretation of the character of Sharmaji, though. While Rishi ji’s portions make Sharma ji look like an innocent, good hearted person, Paresh Rawal’s portrayal makes him appear slightly “business-like”. The “kitty party group” are typical rich Delhi wives, boisterous and loud. Look out for Juhi Chawla’s performance though. She stands out beautifully. The secondary characters include Sharmaji’s sons, Rinku and Vincy, who are there to create the conflict in the plot. Efficiently played by the actors, though there wasn’t much for them to do.
Music and BGM score
Music by Sneha Khanwalkar (Gangs of Wasseypur fame) is strictly okay. Nothing extraordinary. The title track is catchy.
Final Verdict
The movie attempts something that has never been attempted in Indian cinema, and that’s commendable. The movie, frankly, is not something that would be path-breaking, but an honest, feel-good entertainer. You will end the film with a smile on your face. A fitting tribute to the legend that was Rishi Kapoor. Do watch to pass 2 hours in a breeze. Available on Amazon Prime
