Hello Movie Maniacs
Resident evil movie series had its highs and lows. The series started with the first instalment being a complete entertainer, but it started going downhill from there on. Each sequel became more and more campy and ludicrous. Hence, I was very hopeful when a reboot of the series was announced.
To be honest, the Milla Jovovich led franchise was less of a zombie horror action movie, and more like a superhero film.
With this reboot, an attempt has been made to restart the resident evil franchise. As per reports, this reboot is expected to be much truer to the video game itself.
Plot
The movie is about raccoon City where a deadly virus is unleashed. As the Zombie outbreak intensifies, a bunch of police personnel and civilians, find themselves searching for a way out of the city.
Story
The story is a merger of the first two instalments of this iconic video game. Made on a minimal budget, this movie attempts to cram in too much of fan service, and ends up as a convoluted mess of a story. It is nostalgic to see all the major characters in the game franchise come alive but the slow pace makes it dull. The emotionless dialogues between the major characters make this a bore fest at times. The atmospheric setting of the movie deserves a praise, but that is all the good there is to write about.
The only sequence entertaining for both fans of the game and a casual viewer, is a 10 minute survival sequence. The feel of the game and horror is palpable as our lead characters battle to survive in a zombie infested mansion.
The finale of the movie is rather lacklustre, and the ending fails to provide a satisfactory closure.
Performances
On the acting front all the actors have done a fairly decent job. There is no exceptional performance worthy of being quoted individually, and neither is it expected in such movies.
Final Verdict
Overall resident evil welcome to the raccoon City is a movie that could have been better than what it turned out to be. A better script could have finally given us fans of the game a worthy live action adaptation. Unfortunately, the wait continues.
