Netflix is a treasure trove. It has such a vast collection of quality material that it is difficult to consume in one lifetime. The only problem is that while searching for treasure you are bound to Stumble upon more than fair share of complete and utter trash. Yet when you find something that is completely offbeat and a pleasure to watch, everything else will be forgotten.
I happened to discover one such mini web series that was a different kind of psychological supernatural horror, and by the end of 4 episodes I was thoroughly entertained.
Let us discuss Rabid
I am talking about Rabid, a Filipino horror anthology with 4 horror stories set in the time of pandemic.
So, let us to a snap review of all the four stories in the chronological order.
1. Bad luck is a B*tch
What happens when a family lets in a destitute out of pity and gives her shelter during the lockdown, only to discover that the destitute is also a powerful witch?
The story will pull you in with its brilliant use of psychological and horror elements as you will start feeling nothing but helplessness watching the destitute witch torture the entire family.
2. HM?
What happens when a single mother starts a food business but has to resort to using a mysterious secret ingredient in order to up her sales?
The story is not merely a horror story but also a social commentary on today’s generation’s search for fame on social media. It cleverly presents the concept of greed and how it has consumed our senses.
3. Nothing beats meat
A desperate man tries to find a cure for his zombified wife while staying locked in a cave. Will he succeed?
Pictured in black and white frames, this atypical love story will make you feel the pain of a lover watching her love suffer. The end is both happy as well as tragic in equal measures.
4. Sh*t happens
What happens when a nurse working a graveyard shift encounters a patient that will not stop asking for assistance?
Although this is the weakest story in this limited series, it still beautifully encapsulates its message of empathy (or lack of it) beneath the layers of horror.
My Take
All the four stories have been directed beautifully and all the actors have done a tremendous job. One only wishes that the series were dubbed in English as reading the subtitles is sometimes distracting from what is happening on the screen.
Overall, this Filipino horror anthology is a refreshing change from the conventional Hollywood horror stuff.
Watch it if you are looking to see something different.
