Hello Movie Maniacs
There are some actors who have become kind of an afterthought in the flurry of actors arriving in the industry. Almost every month some or the other actor/actress makes a debut. As a result, many old names are getting lost in the shuffle and now the movies are being released straight to OTT platforms. It is kind of a shame because in today’s age of short term attention, some really fine actors have never been allowed to reach the level of greatness that they deserve.
To achieve what you deserve becomes an even more arduous task if you happen to be the son of India’s biggest megastar.
Yes, I am talking about Abhishek Bachchan. When he came on to the scene, he was immediately return of as someone who cannot act but through his sheer dedication, he proved his mettle and yet somehow, he has become lost from the Limelight in recent years.
Hence it was a surprise when I came to know that his latest movie titled Dasvi is getting released on Netflix. Well, today I am going to cut open this latest offering from Netflix, so let’s prep the OT.
Plot
Dasvi is a tale of a chief minister, who is convicted for a swindle and sent to jail while in power. There he runs into a tough lady superintendent with whom he is initially at loggerheads, but eventually she makes him realize that he is just an uneducated fool. From there begins the journey of the protagonist to get educated and pass high school exam from jail. There is also a subplot involving the old adage of Power corrupts, as the puppet CM who is the wife of Jailed ex CM, starts getting addicted to power and tries to prevent her husband from getting educated.
Story
The story is pretty simple and there are no forced mellow dramatic elements in the movie. The chemistry between the seasoned politician and the young female police officer has many layers and evolves from a healthy adversity to subtle respect. The best thing is that the writers have not tried to force a romantic angle between the two lead characters.
The first ARC where the politician finds it hard to adjust to the life in jail is quite entertaining. His attempts to get out of jail on medical grounds are a bit over the top but acceptable. The story really picks up when the realisation dawns and the politician decide to study and clear the 10th board exams.
The side plot involving the politician’s wife as CM is slightly cringe at times but adds to the whole drama.
The whole arc involving the politician studying is kind of a mixed bag. While some sequences are inspiring and prop up the message of importance of education, some others are typically bollywoodish and have been added just to induce some humour.
The climax of the movie is slightly lacklustre and feels a bit rushed and the takeaway message about the importance of education does not come across powerfully.
Performances
On the acting front Abhishek Bachchan has done an impressive job. As a Haryanvi politician he has delivered his lines with perfect diction and matched them with right emotions. From comic timing to seriousness, he has performed perfectly throughout the movie.
Yami Gautam has once again proved that she is the Jimmy Shergill of actress division. After a power packed performance on Thursday, she has given another effortless performance. She has a charming presence, and she is not just a beautiful smiling face as some (in)famous critics say.
Nimrat Kaur has given an over the top performance and is probably the weakest performance amongst entire cast.
Music and soundtrack
The music is average and there is nothing exceptional to write about. The BGM is fairly decent but don’t expect any of the kind of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly level.
Final verdict
Overall Dasvi is a onetime fun watch which can be enjoyed with the entire family. Of all the recent movies released on Netflix this is by far one of the better movies. Watch it just for the acting performances of Abhishek Bachchan and Yami Gautam.
Also, do not miss the Ravish Kumar punch by our Raja Rabish fame Shivankit Singh.
Looks interesting…Will try to watch it…
