Aliens are invading
A sleepy town has been invaded by mysterious glob like aliens who can possess the body of humans, and unfortunately they run into two friends who are experts at playing laser tag. This is the premise of Norwegian film Blasted
That is a very silly plot. Hence, it will be foolish to expect some exceptional cinematic experience from this movie. Thus, I watched this movie with almost negligible expectations. With movies like this one may assume them to be cheesy, campy and humorous. Sadly it is neither.
A tale of two friends
The main protagonist in this movie are two friends, Sebastian and Mikkel, who were the best laser tag team in their young age. With time the two have drifted apart. While one friend has become a typical boring corporate slave, trying to woo a potential investor, the other is still stuck in his laser tag days. In order to impress the rich investor, Sebastian takes him to his bachelor party in a faraway cabin. Surprisingly his fiance also extends the invitation to Mikkel for the party.
The two friends soon find themselves amidst chaos as alien possessed humans run rampant in and around town. The only way to stop them is to fight them with laser tag guns.
A bland story
The story line has nothing refreshing to offer. Except for a few gags at the start, there is a serious lack of humour in Blasted. None of he characters except Sebastian is well developed. Even the sacrifice of a side protagonist towards end fails to invite any reaction other then “meh”.
The bromance between the two long lost friends lacks spark and the whole emotional angle feels subdued. We also have a pregnant cop who gives the Sigourney Weaver vibes but that is it.
Made for TV indeed
The movie has a very limited budget as evident from the VFX. The cinematography is okay. Once we reach the indoor scenes, the sets expose the shoe string budget of this movie.
Blasted is supposed to be the kind of movie you can enjoy with friends over beer. Sadly, it fails in what it aspired to be.
