Hello Movie Maniacs
What happens when a lone female army officer gets trapped on a missile interceptor rig deep in the center of ocean, and she is also the last hope of a country threatened by nuclear missiles.
The central theme
Interceptor is an action drama centered around the lead character of captain JJ Collins played by Elsa Pataky. She has just been transferred to this missile base in the center of ocean. The rig is one of the two lines of defense against any incoming missile threats against USA. We quickly learn that the other interceptor base has been taken over by unknown terrorists. Therefore Collins finds herself in the middle of action as a small group of mercenaries tries to take over the rig.
Soon Collins is the only one standing between the mercenaries and USA. She becomes the last line of defense protecting America from massive destruction.
An action thriller with layered protagonist
The movie is an out and out action thriller laced with layers of sexism and misogyny. The back story of Captain Collins facing sexism and abuse from male dominant army makes for compelling story telling. It builds sympathy for Collins and evokes cheers at her victory.
Luke Bracey as chief antagonist Alexander Kessel does a fine job too but the film is plagued with too many problems on the story front.
The Panic is absent
Although life of 300 million people is at stake, that panic never sets in. Chris Hemsworth through his cameo further dilutes the severity of the situation. The actions of some of the mercenaries makes one doubt their IQ. And then there is the final act. No way can a person with a bad injured arm climb a stair and hit enter on a laptop within 30 seconds. In fact entire final act is so formulaic that it kills any excitement one may have developed while watching the movie.
Final Verdict
Interceptor had a very interesting concept but unfortunately the script did not do justice to it. The movie falls flat and none of the action sequences is unique.
Interceptor is a one time watch but even that one watch will force the viewer to have multiple breaks.
