Hello Movie Maniacs
Is the superhero genre on its last leg? Have the studios gone for the overkill? Are we witnessing the end of superhero boom? These are the questions that come to the mind once you have watched the latest offering from the Sony Marvel superhero juggernaut. After a slightly underwhelming Spiderman : No way home that was saved by the nostalgia trap of seeing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returning as Spiderman, comes another movie that leaves a sour taste in mouth.
Well, it is time to open up Morbius.
Plot
Morbius is the story of Dr Michael Morbius, who suffers from a rare blood illness and in order to cure himself ends up turning himself into a vampire. As he struggles to control his bloodlust, he has to confront his surrogate brother who shared the same illness and now shares the same superpowered vampirism too.
Story
The story of Morbius is very unidimensional and that is why the movie fails to click. The audience does not feel any investment into either of the characters and their motives. The horror elements are very lacklustre and do not offer anything that we have not seen before in countless vampire movies. The romantic angle is very insipid, and the death of female lead evokes no emotions. Thus, the story comes across as completely flat from the first frame to the last.
Performances
With an impressive star cast at their disposal in form of Jared Leto, Matt Smith and Jared Harris, the poor script leaves no space for the seasoned actors to showcase their talent and range. To add to that misery the director has used Matt Smith in a very cringe inducing shirtless dance sequence.
VFX
One of the most important aspects of any superhero movie is the VFX. That is another aspect where Morbius fails to impress. The action scenes are very generic and the whole flying using echolocation part is not impressive in any way. The final fight sequence also fails to deliver and offers no spectacular moment that will make you go wow.
Final Verdict
Morbius is the movie that tries to be too many things at a time and ends up being neither. It is neither a superhero movie nor a horror movie and thus is a movie you can completely skip.
